Outlook 2003

PST file size may increase and result in abrupt behavior. The strangely behaving Outlook might restrict you to work easily on the email platform and make all the procedures act lethargically. This is surely an outcome of large PST file size. However, you can always compact the PST file and make sure you don’t come across such issues.

To save space, you can always delete unwanted email items from PST folders and compact the PST file to take lesser space on your hard disk drive. Compacting PST will not help you in removing the entire free space from the file, but leaves 16KB or 4% of the file size (whichever is greater) before it performs the compact process. In order to compact a file, PST must meet the following requirements:

PST must be 16 KB or bigger

PST must have a minimum of 16 KB free space since the last time it was compacted

PST files can also be compacted manually; on the other hand automatic compaction takes place in the background as an idle task. In order to ensure that this automatic compaction takes place at regular intervals on your computer as an idle task, following conditions must be true:

Outlook 2003 must be running

Computer must not be occupied with other CPU-intensive tasks such as copying or downloading files
In order to start manual compaction in MS Outlook 2003, you need to follow these steps:

1.Go to File menu, click Data File Management

2.Select the PST files that you wish to compact and then click Settings

Note- For Windows 2003, the default path of PST files is: drive:\Documents and Settings\user\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\Outlook.

3.Click Compact Now and click OK

4.Click Close

Exceeding the size of 2gb in PST files also makes the file data corrupt or inaccessible. This situation might result in loss of important data. Make sure you don’t fall prey to this situation and in case you accidentally do, use Kernel for Outlook PST repair tool. Kernel for Outlook PST repair tool is an ideal utility to repair Outlook 2003 PST file so that you can continue working with your valuable PST data.
